Trusted Deck Builder in South Lake Tahoe, CA

Built for Tahoe Decks: Snow-Load Strength, Weatherproof Details

Decks at elevation take a beating. Snow sits on them for months. UV exposure at 6,200 feet is intense. Freeze-thaw cycles work fasteners loose and split wood. Most deck failures we see come from shortcuts taken during the original build — shallow footings, inadequate flashing, and fasteners that corrode.

We build decks with the assumption that they'll carry snow loads, get shoveled regularly, and sit in direct sun for months. That means footings below frost line, stainless hardware, composite or commercial-rated decking, and flashing details that keep water out of your siding.

FEATURED PROJECT

A recent Lake Tahoe deck project - Spring Creek

When we started this project, the client wanted a clean, minimal look to optimize the view of the surrounding forest. We accomplished this by creating a minimalist design handrail with fortress panels. We attached the panels in a manner that did not require any additional picture framing or metal fortress tracks, thus optimizing the view and allowing the handrail to blend into the natural landscape.

All the decking and handrails were installed with hidden fasteners. The space under the deck was enclosed with a large door installed on the backside to create storage for all the patio furniture and summer toys.

Whether you’re planning a residential renovation, a commercial build, or site improvements, we’ll tailor a solution that fits your requirements.

01

02

Project Planning & Design

Once we have a clear understanding of your vision, we move into the planning phase. Our team works closely with you to finalize design concepts, select materials, and establish a detailed timeline. During this phase, we ensure that all the necessary permits and approvals are in place.

03

Proposal & Agreement

After finalizing the project scope, we provide a detailed proposal that includes an accurate estimate of costs, timelines, and other important project details. Once everything is approved, we’ll sign an agreement to officially kick off the project. Nils did a great job repairing late October bear damage under our vacation home! After being strung along for a month by one repair guy and declined by 2 others (too busy), I got lucky finding Nils who responded right away via Yelp. With the first winter storm approaching, Nils quickly removed/ replaced torn up insulation, crushed heating ducts, vents, and siding, plus a broken fence & gate. Nils was super professional coordinating with me (out-of-town owner) and my property manager. I would definitely use him again.

The home we purchased in Stateline did not have a bathroom fan. Nils came out, estimated the project and then returned after I had received the bathroom light/fan I had ordered. He installed it and properly vented it to the outside. I will definitely use him again for any future needs I have.

I’m highly recommending this company. They did a great job in my house. If you looking for some who can handle all kind of remodeling you are can hire them.

Nils and his team are amazing craftsmen! They were easy to work with, and charged a reasonable fee for the superb quality of work they performed – is this case a high end deck. Sten Construction is a top 10 builder.

Before You Build

What You Need to Consider When Building a Deck in Lake Tahoe

Start with what's under the deck. Footings in Tahoe need to sit 36–42 inches below grade to get below the frost line. If they're too shallow, freeze-thaw cycles will heave the posts and rack your entire frame within a few seasons. Soil conditions vary lot to lot — rocky ground may require drilling rather than digging, and slopes often mean stepped footings or engineered piers.

Think about what the deck needs to carry. Snow loads at elevation can exceed 100 pounds per square foot, which means your joists, beams, and connections all need to be sized for far more than foot traffic and furniture. A deck that feels solid in summer can fail under a heavy snow year if it wasn't engineered for the load.

Choose your decking material carefully. At 6,200 feet, UV exposure is roughly 25% more intense than at sea level. Wood decking fades and splits faster, requiring refinishing every 2–3 years. Composite holds up better against UV and snow shoveling, but not all composites perform equally at altitude — cheaper products can warp or become brittle in extreme cold.

Factor in permitting and setbacks. Depending on your jurisdiction, decks may count toward your lot's allowable coverage under TRPA rules. Setback requirements, height limits, and railing codes all vary — and getting these wrong means tearing out finished work. We handle these details upfront so the build goes smoothly from day one.

FAQ

Common questions

  • How much does a new deck cost in Tahoe?

Deck costs depend primarily on material choice (composite vs. wood), deck size, and site conditions. Steep lots require more complex foundations and structural engineering, which increases cost. Composite decking has a higher upfront cost but virtually zero maintenance over its lifespan. Our bids include everything — demo, footings, framing, decking, railings, stairs, and inspections — so there are no surprise line items after the project starts.

  • What should I expect on build day?

Construction starts with footing excavation and concrete pours, which need to cure before framing begins. Once footings are set, framing goes up quickly — typically a few days for most residential decks. Decking, railings, and stairs follow in sequence. We schedule inspections at each milestone (footings, framing, final) and keep you updated on daily progress. Most deck builds run 2–4 weeks depending on size and complexity.

  • How do you handle budget and change orders?

Every project starts with a detailed, line-item estimate. If something changes — and things do change — we document the change order with exact costs and get your written approval before proceeding. No work happens without your sign-off. We track budget status in your weekly updates.

  • Do you work with architects and designers?

Yes. We collaborate regularly with local architects, interior designers, and structural engineers. If you already have a design team, we integrate with them. If you need recommendations, we can suggest professionals we've worked with successfully.

  • Can you work on my home while I'm not in Tahoe?

Absolutely. Many of our clients are part-time Tahoe residents. Our weekly photo updates, shared project folders, and phone access keep you fully informed. We've managed entire projects with homeowners out of state.

  • What permits are typically required?

Most renovation and new construction projects in the Tahoe Basin require permits from both the local jurisdiction (City of South Lake Tahoe or El Dorado County) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). We handle the permit process and factor approval timelines into the schedule.
