Tahoe Kitchen Remodeling: Modern Mountain Design, Mountain-Grade Build
A kitchen remodel in South Lake Tahoe isn't just about new cabinets and countertops, it's about building joinery, ventilation, and finishes that perform at 6,200 feet. Wood expands and contracts more here. Range hoods need to be sized for lower air density. Appliance lead times stretch when you're not in a metro area. Every decision in your kitchen remodel needs to reflect the conditions the kitchen will actually live in.
We approach every kitchen remodeling project with the same standard: tight joinery, custom cabinetry built for seasonal wood movement, durable surfaces (quartz, honed granite, or solid hardwood), and layouts that match how the household actually uses the space. Whether it's a primary residence, a vacation home, or a high-end short-term rental, the build holds up.
We coordinate cabinetry lead times, appliance procurement, electrical panel upgrades, and PEX plumbing replacement so the kitchen remodel runs on a real schedule, not an optimistic one. Weekly photo updates, line-item bids, and a documented closeout.

FEATURED PROJECT
Our Recent Lake Tahoe Kitchen Renovation - Ala Wai.
This project involved a complete tear-out of a dated kitchen in a 1980s lakeside home. The homeowners wanted a modern mountain aesthetic that would hold up to Tahoe's humidity and temperature swings.
We also rerouted all the old plumbing and electrical from two walls to create a more open concept. A custom fireplace was built on-site to accommodate the space to the clients’ needs. Beautiful custom cabinets were installed with countertops that had subtle blue streaking throughout to tie into the cabinets.
The bathroom was updated with all new flooring, tile, and fixtures and the ceiling was raised to create a larger, more enjoyable shower enclosure.

How We Work
Structure protects everyone — homeowner and builder. Here's what to expect from start to finish.
Initial Consultation
We start with a thorough conversation about your vision, project goals, and the realities of your home. Whether you're planning a kitchen refresh, a whole-home renovation, or a ground-up custom build, the first meeting is the same: we listen, we ask the right questions, and we tell you straight whether we're the right fit before anyone signs anything.
01
02
Project Planning & Design
Once direction is set, we move into design coordination and material selection in parallel with permitting. For Tahoe projects that means TRPA submittals, City of South Lake Tahoe or El Dorado County review, and any defensible-space or BMP requirements specific to your lot. The timeline you see at the end of this phase is the timeline we plan around, weather included.
03
Proposal & Agreement
You get a detailed, line-item proposal, labor, materials, allowances, and contingencies all spelled out. Our bids are tight on purpose: the price you approve is the price you pay, unless you change the scope. No surprise change orders for things we should have caught up front.
Construction Phase
Crews show up, work gets done, and you stay in the loop. You'll have a direct line to your project lead, weekly written and photo updates, and immediate flags on anything that needs a decision from you. We'd rather pause for an hour to ask than redo a wall later.
04
05
Project Completion & Walk-Through
Before we call it done, we walk the whole project with you, punch list in hand. Anything that isn't right gets fixed before the final invoice, not after. You sign off when you're actually satisfied, not because the calendar says the job is over.
06
Ongoing Support
After the build, we're still the number you call. Warranty items, follow-up work, future phases, or just a question about the house years down the road, Sten Construction stays on the hook for what we built.

Nils did a great job repairing late October bear damage under our vacation home! After being strung along for a month by one repair guy and declined by 2 others (too busy), I got lucky finding Nils who responded right away via Yelp. With the first winter storm approaching, Nils quickly removed/ replaced torn up insulation, crushed heating ducts, vents, and siding, plus a broken fence & gate. Nils was super professional coordinating with me (out-of-town owner) and my property manager. I would definitely use him again.

The home we purchased in Stateline did not have a bathroom fan. Nils came out, estimated the project and then returned after I had received the bathroom light/fan I had ordered. He installed it and properly vented it to the outside. I will definitely use him again for any future needs I have.

Nils and his team are amazing craftsmen! They were easy to work with, and charged a reasonable fee for the superb quality of work they performed – is this case a high end deck. Sten Construction is a top 10 builder.

Why Tahoe Is Different
What Makes Kitchen Remodeling in Lake Tahoe Different
Tahoe's dry winters and humid summers cause wood to expand and contract more than in stable climates. Cabinet joinery, countertop seams, and flooring transitions all need to account for seasonal wood movement, or they crack within the first year.
Ventilation behaves differently at 6,200 feet. Range hoods need to be sized for lower air density, and makeup air requirements are stricter in tightly sealed mountain homes. We spec ventilation systems that actually perform at elevation, not just meet minimum code.
Appliance lead times stretch longer outside of metro areas. Built-in refrigerators, pro-style ranges, and custom panels can take 12-16 weeks. We order early and coordinate delivery windows so appliances arrive when the kitchen is ready, not months after.
Tahoe's short build season and tight subcontractor availability mean kitchen remodels need to be sequenced carefully. We front-load procurement so construction moves efficiently once it starts, and we plan around shoulder seasons when out-of-town homeowners want minimal disruption.
FAQ
Common questions
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Tahoe?
Kitchen remodel costs in Lake Tahoe vary widely based on scope. A cosmetic refresh, new countertops, cabinet refacing, updated fixtures, runs significantly less than a full gut renovation with structural changes, custom cabinetry, and appliance upgrades. Mountain construction carries cost premiums due to material delivery logistics, shorter build seasons, and specialized labor. We provide detailed, line-item bids so you see exactly where every dollar goes, no allowances or vague estimates.
What should I expect during the first week of construction?
The first week is typically demolition: removing old cabinets, countertops, flooring, and sometimes walls. We set up dust barriers to contain debris and protect the rest of your home. If you're staying in the house, we'll help you set up a temporary kitchen station. After demo, we assess what's behind the walls, plumbing condition, electrical routing, structural framing, and confirm the scope before trades begin sequencing in.
How do you handle budget and change orders?
Every project starts with a detailed, line-item estimate. If something changes, and on a real project something usually does, we document the change order with exact costs and get your written approval before any work happens. No surprise charges, no "we'll figure it out at the end." You'll see current budget status in every weekly update.
Do you work with architects and designers?
Yes. We collaborate regularly with local architects, interior designers, and structural engineers, and we're comfortable plugging into a design team that's already in motion. If you don't have one yet, we can point you to people we've actually built with, not just names off a list.
Can you work on my home while I'm not in Tahoe?
Yes, and many of our clients are part-time Tahoe owners who never set foot on site during the build. You'll get weekly photo updates, a shared project folder you can check anytime, and direct phone access to your project lead. We've finished entire homes for owners who only saw them in person at the walk-through.
What permits are typically required?
Most renovation and new construction projects in the Tahoe Basin require permits through both the local jurisdiction (City of South Lake Tahoe or El Dorado County) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). We handle the permit process and build the real approval timelines into the schedule, not the optimistic ones.
